Visiting Vancouver and Sechelt for a week in Dec with 8 and 10 year olds. Plan to spend a few days with a friend in Sechelt. Honestly, will be happy just hiking, fishing, and enjoying the views. But, any other ideas for kids as she has none?
We are leaving the desert, and will be happy if cold, windy, snowing, raining...!!!!
Anyone been to Sechelt???

I drive through Sechelt once a month - it's a cute little
village but really comes into its own in summer. However,
if you've got good raingear and fleecy things you should
have a good time with your kids.
I'd drive up to Skookumchuck Narrows and do the short, well-
marked, well surfaced hike to the narrows. Quite dramatic.
Beachcombing is always fun and the beach at Davis Bay has a
nice boardwalk along the shore. The waves can be quite
fearsome in a December storm - you can go across the road
and have hot chocolate at one of the cafes that line the
main 'street'.
You probably won't run into snow but rain is a distinct
possibility!
Well you're coming into a rainforest zone at the height of the rainiest season during the darkest month of the year. It's definitely be the exact opposite of desert.
There is potential for snow at higher elevations, though Sechelt's usually not a snowy place, although you may just hit it where you're in town for that occasional winter snowfall. Typically they don't last long (a day or two), but it can cause delays because the infrastructure isn't set up to handle snow.
Gibsons, in my opinion, is more interesting of a town than Sechelt, but Sechelt's located closer to a variety of provincial parks.
Immediately north of Sechelt is Sechelt Inlet, and there's Porpoise Bay Provincial Park if you're looking for a quick walk along the beach. Further north is the tiny community of Tuwanek - no real stores or town centre, but a rocky beach where people go scuba diving and kayaking. If you happen to hit a nice patch of weather and you go early enough in the day, a kayaking trip from Tuwanek north to Mount Richardson Provincial Park would be really cool for your kids. It's basically a tiny beach/campsite only accessible by boat. It's an easy kayak trip as long as the weather's on your side.
Thanks for the direction in planning. I am fully expecting rain, my friend has already informed me that they have loads of rainwear!!! But quite honestly, I hope for some clear weather part of the time for hiking and beachcombing, but my kids haven't experienced much "running in the rain" or snow flurries, so I think we'll enjoy whatever we find there.
I am looking into all suggestions though and it really looks like a wonderful place to visit! Thanks!
