After a few days in downtown Vancouver, we family of four plan to drive up to Powell River and take the ferry to Comox. What to do for two days until we must take ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles? Should we consider driving to Port Hardy? Or Tofino?
Any recommendations on budget family accomodations? We prefer cabins, and are more outdoor-oriented than garden-touring, tea-sippers. Thanks!
Advice RE Comox entry to Vancouver Is.

PAcific spirit national park has lots of hiking trails and outdoors stuff to do. Tofino and Uclulet are nice little towns in the park. Awesome beach and ocean views. Check out provincial park campgrounds, bc parks web site (campgrounds open after may)
I would forget Port Hardy and head Tofino way. But you might not have much time there depending on what month you're travelling and how bad the line-ups are at the ferry. I find it easiest to leave the car at the Coho dock early in the morning or even overnight if they allow it.
You could stay at the beach (Rathtrevor) at Parksville instead. It's not as spectacular as Long Beach but is more sheltered, and it would cut down on driving time as it is on the way to Victoria.
At the risk of offending my friends who live in Powell River-why go there?-unless you have family there that is.
Powell River is a smelly gritty mill town with very little to recommend it to visitors.
A tourist destination it ain't.
