9 days newfoundland

Travelling to Newfoundland some point over summer. Will be travelling ferry. Looking to travel the long ferry there and spending some time at gros mourn before heading to st John's and leaving that ferry.

I want to travel some back roads, small towns and coast. Stay off hhighway as much as possible. Any ideas of where to travel and go. Want to see all of the island.

With only 9 days you are going to be very rushed doing both the east and west coasts of Newfoundland as you propose, and you are going to be spending a lot of time on the Trans Canada Highway whether you want to or not.

You should consider visiting either the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas on the east; or Gros Morne and either the northern peninsula or the Twillingate area if you go west.

The "long ferry" by which I imagine you mean North Sydney Argentia will not take you anywhere near Gros Morne--it is the closest link to St John's. It's the shorter North Sydney to Port-aux-Basques that is closest to Gros Morne on the west coast.

You won't see all the island even in 2 weeks but that is the minimum time in my opinion to do what you are planning.

My wife and I are going to Newfoundland for the first time in mid August for two weeks landing in St John's. I must admit to be somewhat stymied by what would be a good itinerary. We have a car reserved and will start in St John's for 3 days, the car starting once we leave the city. We are interested in culture and history and while we like walks, we are not hikers. More and more in my travels I like the idea of really connecting with the people and places rather than covering huge amounts of territory. We fly out of Gander.

Any ideas gratefully appreciated.
