I'm looking to plan a last minute 2-3 day trip for my wife and I to St. John's and was looking for some suggested itineraries. We enjoy both the outdoors and the cultural/historic aspects of a vacation. (Never been on a vacation where we didn't enjoy ourselves!) Should we bother renting a car? Hotel or B&B? Tours (land or see)? Attractions we should see? It's a shorter time than we'd like but we're squeezing it in between other commitments. Thanks!

I meant to type land or sea, not see. Sorry.
Welcome to Fodor's, John! First let me introduce you to the search engine If you type in St. John's in the search this forum box and then scroll down and highlight Newfoundland in the topics box, you will find lots of previously posted information on St. John's.
Personally, I'd recommend renting a car as taxi service could get a bit pricey, but that depends upon how far out of St. John's you plan to venture. I enjoy staying at B&B's as they seem to provide me with more of a connection to the people in the area, but that's your call. Be sure to go out to Cape Spear (eastern most point on the NA continent) where you might want to take in a sunrise and watch the whales at play from the lighthouse point. Signal Hill is also a must and you would probably enjoy the challenging hiking trails there as well as the magnificent view from Cabot Tower. Hi John:
I'd probably squeeze in a whale watching/bird sanctuary tour like O'Briens in Bay Bulls. If you decide to stay in the area there is a great hike at the end of Quay's Road in Bay Bulls to Witless Bay - a six hour round trip walk - pack a lunch and lots of water. The other hike is on the other side of Bay Bulls to the lighthouse, fabulous views. We ran into two ladies from Paris on that hike and they were as facinated with Newfoundland as we were with Paris.
My favorite B&B in St. John's is Oh What a View! on Signal Hill. The GEO Center, the Rooms, the Newfoundland & Labrador Craft Council, any pub on Water Street and a pub crawl on George Street during the last week of July should not be missed. The Regetta is the first Wednesday in August at Quidi Vidi and the Folk Festival in early August as well. Hope that helps. Enjoy our town.
