20 hour layover

Hi, I'm 18 years old and I'll be flying internationally for the first time to visit my brother and sister in law in south korea later this year. My layover is in Vancouver for 20 hours, and I was wondering what I should do with that time? I would prefer not to get a hotel room, due to me being cheap. My flight arrives on a Saturday at 4pm, and departs at 12pm. Since it's my first time, I already know I'm going to be anxious the entire time.

Relax!

With 20hrs you have plenty of time to get out of the airport. You will just need to make sure that you allow plenty of time to get back through check in/security for your flight. I think they suggest arriving 3-3.5 hrs before you flight.

Since you are arriving late afternoon and will spend a lot of time on the plane to South Korea, it might be well worth getting a good night's sleep. While you can sometimes get away with sleeping at the terminal, it's not likely to be good sleep or very interesting.

You might consider one of the excellent Hi Hostels in town - the Vancouver Central location is easily accessed via the SkyTrain and then about 3 blocks of walking. It would be about $9 each way for the train and $25-35 for the hostel bed (plus free breakfast). Allow about an hour each way. With no delays, you could easily be there in time to grab a cheap meal at one of the many cafes/restaurants and not have to leave until around 8am.

Agree with kgsneds that with the length of your layover, a cheap hostel bed is a great idea. 20 hours is a long time to be wandering around or sitting at YVR. Even with transit and airport check in there is still plenty of time to do a bit of walking around, having dinner and getting some sleep in the city.
