A friend and I decided we are going to go on a two week trip to the Pacific Islands. We originally thought Indonesia as we both would like to go there. I have learned on past trips that the information you guys have on here is really helpful in finding a more authentic trip(rather than a touristy one). We are open to new ideas but so far are interested in seeing bali. We are not planning in staying in fancy hotels(in fact any good recommendations on really cheap places to stay would be great) although as far as getting places and things to do money is not an object. We are not into nightlife although its always exciting to experience that for a few nights. We want good surfing, to see the jungle, and are interested in Asian culture. We are in our early twenties and I have never been to this part of the world although have a decent amount of experience traveling, but would really appreciate any advice or insight on this area/ where to go/ things to see/hidden jems.
Also, I have a friend who was recently traveling across asia, he said in his travels he has heard that Indonesia is a hard place to travel without a guide. Is this true?
Thank you in advance!
Jean

Oh also, if it helps any we are planning to go mid may.
Indonesia/Bali threads are over on the Asia forum . . .
Try Lombok - it's the island right next to Bali. It's less touristy than Bali.
