Where to take a visitor in Feb 2010???

          Hi all,

DH and I are US expats living in Sydney for the past two years. We've just found out that our 26 yr old Nephew is coming from the US to visit for 2-1/2 weeks in February. He's going to spend a week exploring Sydney on his own (while we're working) and then we would like to take him somewhere amazing for about 5-6 days!

Our Nephew thinks we should go somewhere DH and I haven't been, but we've been some amazing places that we think he would enjoy and we would like to see again. Interests are Hiking, biking, adventure type stuff.....any type of outdoor activities!! He's left the decision in our hands, thinking we will know best where we should go. Regardless, we will confirm our suggested trip with him and make sure he's on board with the idea.

We're thinking about the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree rainforest (we've been there twice, the latest time last June with our Niece) Feb isn't the best time of year to go, but it's when he'll be here!

Another option would be to fly to NZ (Queenstown...we were there last Christmas)...weather would be optimal there. Although, I feel like we should be showing him Australia since we live here.

North Island of NZ is another option we have considered...haven't done too much research on that yet. Lot's of adventure options there? Or would it be better to go to Queenstown?

Weather would be great in Tassie, but is that a destination for a first time visitor?

We've eliminated the Red Centre as a destination, even though we've really enjoyed it. Feb will be too hot to really enjoy the hiking opportunities there!

Great Ocean Road....nice scenery and all, but perhaps a bit too tame for an adventureous 26 yr old.

Darwin & Kakadu would be great, but isn't it the rainy season then? We don't want to lose days to too much rain.

I'd appreciate any suggestions, comments, ideas about where we should take our Nephew. He'll be happy with whatever we do, but we want to give him the best trip ever!

BTW....Thanks for the suggestions about our upcoming trip to the South Coast....We decided to stay in Narooma and take day trips from there!! :)
