Where to stay in Melbourne?
What would be a good place to stay in Melbourne for New year's eve? We are not the nightclubbing types, but would still like to be close to a lively spot. We are open to suggestions for both service apartments and hotels. Thanks Fodorites!

Any hotel located on the Yarra River at Southbank or along Flinders Street . That will enable access to fireworks and the like . Big range and prices . And as it is NYE unlikely to be cheap deals .I suggest you book something now .

Hop onto www.wotif.com there are some great specials out for Melbourne as far ahead as New Years Eve. Have a look at the mystery deals esp 4/5 star ones - you never know your luck.
I can personally recommend the Quest Apartments. www.questapartments.com.au They are ALWAYS very clean and well decked out. Self catering. A home away from home. Reasonably priced. Bookings are open for as far ahead as 28 December. So I'm guessing New Year bookings won't be far away. You could always ring them. Go for St Kilda, South Yarra, Richmond. Anywhere really, you'll be in the action. Not Geelong though.
Have fun!

Hello - Per John's post something along the famed Southbank would be a great option; centrally located and amongst some great restauarants, wine bars, the Crown Casino and within walking distance (via a footbridge) to the heart of the City for great retail. Indeed you need to look to book something now, if you want something upscale I would suggest Crown Towers, or next level down would be Crown Promenade - both are hotel style options. There is countless options and often you will need to book several nights as a block. I am originally from Victoria and have stayed at several of the properties along Southbank - you will love the location and also Melbourne. [email protected]
