Western Australia a Wildlife

Hello I will be visiting Western Australia in September. Can anyone give me tips on what animals are there and how I can see the most of them? Are there any koalas or penguins? So far I'm going to Perth and camping south of Perth, the Kimberly and Kakadu.

Thanks!

Hi Tracy! There are lots of animals, kangaroos, wallabies, lots of birds! If you are going in September you may be lucky to go whalewatching too. Are you travelling on your own?

Hi Mikifanti! I'll be visiting a friend in Bunbury and she is taking me camping south of there. The rest of the time I'll be on my own and I plan to take tours. Probably to a Kakadu and either the Kinberly or Ukuru. I want to go to Kangaroo Island, but I fear not enough time. I'm planning 2 weeks but may have to extend to 2 1/2! I can't wait . Is Rottnest Island worth a visit to see the little marsupials there?

I loved the trip out to Rotto to see the quokkas but that was more than 30 years ago, so I expect it has changed. Your friend might know the current status.

Hi Tracy -

I'm not a fan of Rotto, but there's no denying that it's the best place to see the quokkas, which freely wander the island. They alone made the trip to Rotto worth it for me.

You'll find kangaroos just about everywhere, but an abundance of them can be found in Pinnaroo cemetery, which is located off the north Mitchell Freeway at the Whitfords exit. It's my personal favorite place to photograph the creatures. Early morning is best, although in the winter months, they're out during the day as well. They are wild, do keep a respectful distance.

Caversham Wildlife Park is the perfect place to see koalas, wallabies (which you can hand feed) wombats, birds etc. It's a great day out and can be combined with a nice lunch at a nearby Swan Valley winery (I suggest Lamont's - fab food). BIrds are everywhere and quite vocal - just seek out any park and you'll be set.

Koalas aren't native to WA, but you can also see them at Yanchep National Park, as they keep several up there.

If you make it down to Denmark, there's a great little Alpaca farm that has koalas, wallabies, etc. They often take in orphans, so it's quite possible you can see and feed some babies. (Pentland)

Penguins can be seen on Penguin Island near Rockingham - check operating schedules as they do close at certain times of year. They operate dolphin tours from here as well and Bunbury is a popular spot for dolphin and whale tours.

Enjoy WA!

I feel the same as Mel about Rotto: not my first choice of a holiday destination but a day trip to see the quokkas is worthwhile. They are darn cute! It's worth it to rent a bike and explore the island, getting away from the developed area near the ferry terminal.

Between Margaret River and Denmark I've seen emus close to the road in roughly the same spot two different years. if you are going to be down that way let me know and I will look at a map and try to be more specific.

I guess a big part of my enjoyment of Rotto was the boat trip out there, I just love being on the water.
