viewing a glacier in New Zealand

Jump to last reply

Hi everyone, I'm an American living in Auckland and my mom and sister will be visiting us in October. They will be here 11 days and would like to see a little bit of NZ. My mom's top priority is seeing a glacier.

It seems like the Franz Joseph is the easiest to see. We won't be doing any glacier hiking - just viewing. The Franz Joseph website says that it's only a 20 minute walk from the car park to the glacier - is that right? My mom isn't a big hiker and we'll have my 4 year old daughter with me.

Also, what's the best way to get to Franz Joseph? The idea of driving from Queenstown does not appeal since we'll have a 4 year old in the back seat, but we'll do it if we have to. If we fly into Hokitika, how far is it?

Thanks for any advice you can give.
