Travel within Australia

My daughter and I will be travel from Christchurch NZ to Cairns Australia to Ayers Rock to Sydney in November. Any suggestions on the way to get the cheapest fares? Unfortunately she will have checked luggage.

Fly mid-week, out of peak season & away from school holidays.

Sign up for Virgin & Qantas webmails.

Both have specials & Virgin has a daily " happy hour", although these routes aren't usually heavily discounted. Supply, demand, Uluru being isolated.

to compare I often go to one of the fare compare sites like webjet. If you key in dates it will give you all the fares that day so you can see which times of the day have the cheaper fares. I then book direct with the airline. I find it easier to see them all at once on the same page so I am not going back and forth between Virgin and Qantas. There are the cheaper Jetstar and Tiger but Ayers Rock will not have cheap fares. I have a relative there and as Bokhara said.... supply and demand means no cheap fares. I haven't flown Jetstar and Tiger but Tiger doesn't seem to get great reviews.

Tiger doesn't fly to the Red Centre.

Check Jetstar, Qantas & Virgin.
Make sure you look to see whether the flight you're choosing is direct or has a stop, which can add quite a bit to your ETA.

Thanks so much for all your advice. I have been looking and Qantas multi city pass seems to be the best so far. Can't decide whether to attach it to my flight from USA or buy separately and get the rate exchange by paying in NZ dollars (since we will be flying out of Christchurch) Thoughts?

If luggage weight is a concern to you may want to have a look at the T&Cs to see if the Aussie Pass allows the international allowance of 32kg (economy) on domestic. Could be another point in favour of the Aussie Pass if the $$ stack up, too.

(QF is a full service airline & allows 23kg on domestic routes free).

Just an FYI that when it comes to flights you're charged in the currency of the country you're booking from.
