Tramping/bushwalking the Great Ocean Road Victoria Australia

I really want to hike the Great Ocean Road track in Victoria, Aus next year. My back is not too good for carrying a heavy rucsac , so I want to cut that down to a minimum. Whens the best bushwalking time of year in the region ? By going when its least rainy I reckon I dont have to carry so much of that gear, but if its too hot I cant hike very far!! Hostels along the route should save carrying tents and gear.I would be interested in hearing about the track. Anyone done it?
