Too much time in Queensland for August? Too little elsewhere?

Jump to last reply

Any and all suggestions / help are welcome. Looking for last second advice before I finalize my flight schedule tomorrow on where I'm going and how much time I should spend there. I'd like any advice concerning how much time I've alotted for each region. What I do can change, the flights can't (well they can, but it will cost 400 dollars!)

I've always wanted to go to Australia and New Zealand and I know the month of August isn't ideal for the south (so unideal I wasn't even going to head to New Zealand) I plan on going back for two-three weeks at some point during Australia's summer to do the Overland Track in Tasmania and go to Melbourne/Adelaide/Brisbane. Maybe I'm wrong though? I've really appreciate the advice I've received and looked at Melbourne and Brisbane. I just don't know if it fits considering the time I have to go and the time of year it is????

INTERESTS
I love hiking, trekking, eating good food and watching animals in the wild :-). I've been obsessed with duck-billed platypusses since my dad brought back a hand puppet when he went to australia when I was a kid.

ITINERARY
SAT AUG 6th to NY to Cairns (arrive Monday the 8th midday)
8th -17th
Great Barrier Reef August 9th, 10th, 11th is this enough time? Especially if i get certified in the states for this!
Atherton Tableland August 12th platypus? :-) Day hike?
Daintree Rainforest August 13th so close, seems like we should go? Day hike?
Rent car one way, drive halfway to Mackay and do something? Have two days for Platypus viewing at Eugenalla and other things? Should we have more time for this?
Stop at Whitsunday Islands along the way?

WED AUG 17TH FLY TO DARWIN
17th-20th
3 1/2 days Kakadu National Park

AUG 21st fly to BALI
21st-27th
almost a week in Bali for relaxing, hiking high peaks there, cultural sites, maybe a homestay

AUG 27th to Uluru
1 1/2 days
Ayers Rock for 1 day-not interested in staying here for long from what I've read but felt the time of year was right. Likely won't ever be back due to location.

AUG 29TH to Synday
4 1/2 days
in Sydney and around the outskirts

FLY HOME SEPT 3rd

Just curious if anyone has any suggestions of what we should add, cutback on? Will we see enough animals in this time? Places we should go? I originally wanted to include Adelaide, but then my wife thought of Bali!
