We want what everyone wants and is so hard to find - a decent hotel in a great location. Two that I'm considering are the Travelodge Wynyard, and the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. Does anyone have any experience with either of these hotels?

Other suggestions welcome as well.

In terms of location, the advantage of staying at Wynyard is you are on a transport hub, however it is in the Central Business District and it's fairly dead at night. I'm guessing "Old Sydney" means the Rocks/Millers Point, if there's a harbour view on offer that might make that a good location. The Rocks can be very rowdy on weekends but it's also near ferry/train/bus.

Just a suggestion, if you want to be where the restaurants are, rather than close to the CBD, Surry Hills, Potts Point or, Paddington are good places to stay.

The city centre of Sydney is dead at night. You will be better off, as per the suggestion above, staying in Surry Hills, Paddington, Potts Point or Darlinghurst.

All four areas are east of the city, have plenty of shops and cafes, public transport, are easy walking distance from the city centre (though Paddington may be a bit far if you are not a keen walker), from the harbour, etc.

My husband and I have stayed at The Holiday Inn Old Sydney on George St. on at least three separate occasions. It's nice, quiet, with a great location right in The Rocks. It has a rooftop pool. You can easily walk to the ferries and busses at Circular Quay. You are close to the CBD. You can walk to many shops and restaurants(Rockpool is steps away). The Museum of Contemporary Art is down the block and across the street. We have stayed at other hotels in Sydney, but this has been our favorite, because of price and location.

The Novotel at Darling Harbour is very nice and was totally refurbished in 2007.My daughter used to work on reception there and the tip is that if you are very nice to the check in staff, they will upgrade you if possible. Try not to be grumpy if you are jetlagged, although I guess that applies everythere in the world. Some of the rooms have lovely views over Darling Harbour, not sure where you are from, but don't expect Sydney Opera House/Harbour Bridge views from here.

We ended up booking at the Bed and Breakfast Sydney Harbour, www.bbsydneyharbour.com.au - saw a few good reviews, and the location looks good. I'll let you know how it works out.

We stayed at the Lord Nelson in the Rocks (but enough on the edge that it wasn't at all rowdy even on the weekend - we were there Saturday night). It was a charming place and the staff was wonderful. The location was great as it was within walking distance to the harbor and the Opera House. We had a view of the bridge from our room. Yes, it was through some tree branches, but we could definitely see it. I would stay there again in a minute.

We recommend the Homebush Sleep Express Motel, which is in Chullora (in Sydney's western suburbs). There are a range of bedding configurations available and the rooms are very comfortable (basic, but they offer everything you need). You're also right around the corner from Chullora Marketplace, so you don't need your car.
