I am only finding Qantus flies from Sydney-Cairns. Is that the case and does anyone know of any deals you can get as a US citizen for these flights?

Qantas and Virgin both fly Sydney to Cairns. Off peak and mid week fares are much cheaper.
Have a look at virginblue.com.au
There are no special deals I'm aware of the US citizens - your dollar is so much stronger than ours that all deals will be pretty special for you.
Check out the Qantas boomerang pass - you need to purchase it before you arrive in Oz
We flew from Cairns to Sydney via Brisbane on Virgin Blue and got a good deal. We just purchased our e-tickets through their web site before we left the States.
It was a much better price then the Boomerang Pass.
