I am interested in learning to surf, and see that Sydney has surf schools at both Bondi and Manly beaches that operate year round. Do people really surf that early (Early September)in the spring? Does a wetsuit really keep you comfortable? Am I crazy to think this could be fun?

I would be grateful for any comments or information about surfing in Sydney!!

dkw - my brother, who is 56, surfs Sydney's northern beaches (from Newport to Palm Beach) nearly every day of the year, but I'm pretty sure he's still in a wet suit in September.

on saturday afternoon (midwinter)I went for a surf (no wetsuit required) at Warriewood on sydneys northern beaches.
Air temp 70 F
water temp 65 F

about 4 persons in the water and a pod of 6 dolphins alos playing in the surf.

There is a cliff behind the beach to protect from the southerly.

Just another reason why some say sydney is the best address on earth.

If you have the time take the "learn to surf" safari from sydney to Byron.

dkw - most normal people don't surf at this time of year, or even in September. Take johnj's advice and head for Byron!

Thanks for the replies!! Unfortunately we will not have time to get up to Byron Bay. We have 5 days in Sydney, then on to Adelaide, Alice Springs/Ayers Rock and Palm Cove.

I think I may give it a try. 65 deg F sounds pretty chilly, but I have swum in the northernmost part of Lake Michigan many times, and it never gets warmer then 70deg F, even in the dead of summer.
Both Manly Surf School and Lets Go Surfing at Bondi have 3 hour introductory classes daily, year round. Their websites note that they provide wet suits. It sounds like I will be using that wetsuit in September.
