How is Christchurch these days? We're going on a three week tour of both islands in December but are undecided about staying two nights in CC. We keep reading about so much of the city being cordoned off or still damaged from the earthquake. Is it still worth a two day visit? And was Akoroa affected? Any input appreciated.

Christchurch is slowly recovering, but has a very long way to go.
We were there about two weeks ago...we stayed at a motel within walking distance of the CBD and spent an afternoon walking around the perimeter of the Red Zone. We saw some folks touring the area by Segway which I thought was a great idea.
There's still plenty to see and do in/around Christchurch. Accommodation can be hard to come by, but we had no issues in June.
Lyttelton was harder hit than Akarora, but I have no recent first hand knowledge of the current status.
Akaroa was reporting after the quake that they were open for business, so I assume that is still true.
