South Pacific Islands - Dog friendly?
Hi everyone,
My daughters and I have always dreamed of seeing and snorkeling in the beautiful waters of the South Pacific. I had started planning a trip to Bora Bora and Moorea when I came upon information that said there are a lot of starving, stray dogs wandering on the islands and that the Tahitian people ignore or run over them. We are VERY much animal lovers (especially dogs). We don't want to spend so much money and travel so far to get upset seeing this and are therefore very turned off to places that have no respect for their animals. Does anyone know of anywhere in the South Pacific that is animal friendly and doesn't leave these poor creatures who can't help themselves that we can visit? We are hoping to plan a trip for October or November. We would really appreciate your help!

Well, there's always Australia, with the largest coral reef on the planet, and we're very kind to our dogs and other pets.
Not a South Pacific island, but Malaysia has some excellent snorkelling sites, was very impressed on a recent visit to see the awareness now of proper care for both their native wildlife and domestic animals.

Roaming stray fleabitten dogs are a feature of Bali - also of course not a Pacific island - so stay clear of there. They don't seem to register on the local people's radar at all.
Many years ago we honeymooned in Fiji and during a taxi ride were taken aback when a dog - not a stray, obviously a family pet in the village we were passing through - didn't get off the road fast enough and was run over by our driver without turning a hair.
I'd think seriously about Pat's GBR suggestion unless you want to interact with the different culture of the Melanesian or Polynesian islands.

Roaming stray dogs are common throughout the Pacific Islands. Some can be quite aggressive and it is often wise to go walking with a big stick for protection. Pigs also run wild in the villages. Some of the Fijian resorts are very safe and offer excellent snorkeling.

Thank you all for the information. We have decided not to go to any of the Pacific Islands. That was horrible Neil what happened. It makes you wonder how some people can be so cruel and uncaring sometimes.
On the bright side, I think maybe Pat had a great idea. We are going to look into Australia. Thanks again guys!
