Okay, I just got two extra days for my trip! So I'm back to the drawing board (but not for long because I'm leaving in two days). The must dos are one day diving from out of Port Douglas and seeing the outback (my 16 year old's request)--that's Chillagoe, right? I'd also like to see Cape Trib, and maybe spend the night up there, and Yungaburra appeals to me as well. But please, tell me, what would you do with eight nights near Cairns? We'll have a rental car, and not much money for fancy places or tours.
Seven Days near Cairns!

Cindy,
I cannot remember what interests you posted on your other threads but why not something like this.
Day 1 Reef Trip
Day 2 Drive to Atherton Tablelands via southern route to see Lake Barrine (take their cruise), the Curtain Fig, Platypus in the evening and opal shopping in Yungaburra, eat at one the of good restaurants there. o/n Yungaburra www.yungaburra.com
Day 3 Do the Waterfall Circuit and call into Tarzali Lakes to see Platypus if you missed them in the late afternoon or early morning. Early dinner and nocturnal tour to see Tree-kangaroos and possums (not closely related to American opossums). o/n Yungaburra
Day 4 Drive to Mt Surprise, stopping off in Herberton & Ravenshoe to look at their museums, the hot springs at Innot Hot Springs and the 40 mile scrub. Eat in the little country pub. o/n Mt Surprise (the caravan park and bedrock village are much cheaper accommodation options than Undara)
Day 5 Lava tube tour either from Bedrock or Undara. Drive to Chillagoe if you have a 4WD or back to Yungaburra if you don't.
Day 6 either Chillagoe or Granite Gorge depending on your choice to end day 5
That will get you started. Then down the coast to Port Douglas, Mossman Gorge and north across the Daintree River to see a different kind of forest.
Hi Cindy
we did the port douglas area a couple of years ago
you might get some useful information out of the trip report
