Scenary around Winton QLD

I'm putting together a trip to Longreach and Winton this coming winter and after recommendations of scenery around Winton. This question comes as a result of the movie "Mystery Road" , which was shot in Winton and the surrounding countryside. If anyone has seen this movie, the scenary towards the end of the movie when they are driving around the hills is the type of thing I am looking for.
PS I will have a 2 wheel drive vehicle.

Mystery Road, that's a great movie. But you are talking about the scenary of Winton and the surrounding countryside, I don't think you can drive there with 2 wheel vehicles. 4 wheel vehicles is the best choice.

That's an outlier for sure. Ask the people who live there - consult www.experiencewinton.com.au, it has a pop-up for enquiries, and here you have three links to official tourism websites: www.winton.qld.gov.au/tourism

Sorry for late reply,

Thankyou for the replies, in particular the info about the area shot in the Movie (its a great australian movie for sure , as you mentioned Gemma, I would almost put in the category of a classic, although seems the industry/media thinks otherwise.)
Thanks for the links michel

cheers

Where are you driving from to get to Winton? I have relatives who live a few hours from Winton and there is a lot of drought stricken land out that way. Roads are not wonderful and nothing like highways you may be used to. Be prepared for change of tyres as the roads can be tough on the rubber is some areas. One spare tyre may not be enough. You often have to pull off the bitumen somewhat if semis are coming in the opposite direction. Don't be driving at dawn or dusk as that is when the kangaroos are moving about to get to and from feeding areas. They can do a lot of damage to a car if they hop out in front of you as you cruise along at a decent speed. Replacement car parts or rental cars may not be available for days.

My suggestion is really read up on the travel involved, the temperatures and the distances between towns. My brother saw far too many people ill prepared for travel out that far.

Thanks october_fun

I will be travelling from Brisbane. I have driven to Roma in the past and am thinking the condition of the sealed raods would be similar? I would not be venturing too far off bituman roads, mainly to national park areas etc; my vehicle is not 4 wheel drive.
Definitely will not be driving at night.
With rEgards to the drought, I was under the impression the Longreach/Winton region have had a reasonable amount of rain over the last 12 months?

Yes they have but they have also had horribly hot weather lately and it doesn't take long for things to dry up. What I meant was people often don't realise the expanse and repetitive nature of the landscape. As you have driven to Roma before you will have an idea of distance. So many tourists comment on the fact they are looking at the same thing with only a town every hour or so to break the travel.

Just wanted to make sure you knew what to expect. As long as you are prepared you will be fine. (make sure the spare tyre isn't one of those new spares that are only for temporary use) and useless if you are on a long trip. The RACQ website can be helpful regarding road works and road conditions.

Enjoy your trip.
