We have five days to drive between Mackay and Port Douglas this November. Does anyone have any recommended stops or nice hotels along the way? We're already planning to spend a night in Charters Towers. We've arranged a trip to the Great Barrier Reef during our stay in Port Douglas, so I'm not sure whether it makes sense to see the Whitsunday Islands or to spend time elsewhere. Any ideas are appreciated.

You can spend time in Charter towers because they have a good service that offer.
Mission Beach would be a great place to stop for a night or two. Beautiful beach, little village, pleasant atmosphere.
Try to fit in a visit to Paronella Park - built by a homesick Spanish immigrant many years ago and completely unique.
The Boulders - about 5 km off the highway at Babinda - nice place to stop for a walk and a picnic. Very much like Mossman Gorge but without the people and cars.
Are you going to Eugenella national park just west of Mackay? We've always seen platypus there.
