Recent visits to Nukubati and Taveuni?
My husband and I will be visiting Nukubati (purchased on luxury link). Has anyone been there lately? Interested in your experiences...
Also, we will be going to Taveuni. For three days we will be at Coconut Grove and if we can change our return tickets, perhaps two or three days at Maravu. Wondering about experiences at both resorts, and advice on activities.
Thanks in advance!!
Wendy

Have you checked the bulletin board at www.fijiguide.com? I know they had a couple trip reports from Nukubati. There was one from this summer that wasn't too positive, IIRC. Nukubati's such a tiny resort (6 bures?) that you won't find too much out about it.

For what it's worth, I do remember a honeymoon couple who went to Nukubati (purchased a Luxury Link package, as well) a few months ago, maybe in July and they were not very happy with it. Have you tried a search for the word "nukubati"? I liked Maravu from the website and my travel agent recommended it, but that's not saying much either.... I was also told that Matangi Island was good, then saw several bad postings about the place recently.... Who are we all supposed to believe?

Hi
Do a search for Nukubati and you'll see my review from a while ago. My husband and I went for our honeymoon in July and we were absolutely disappointed. We also stayed at Cousteau which we loved and were so pleased with. Nukubati is a rip off and the food is not good nor is the beach or bure. Sorry.
I heard Taveuni was nice. I'd definitely recommend Coustea again though.

You know, I considered bidding on a Nukubati package at LuxuryLink. I have previously won packages to Scotland and Bermuda from LL, and both were fabulous deals.
But Nukubati is contantly auctioning weeks off. As soon an auction ends, another begins. They've auctioned off two one-week stays each week for as long as I've been watching it, maybe 6 months or so. And the thing is, they've only got 6 bures. Something just doesn't add up.
Maybe it's nothing, but I didn't want to chance it.

Belated trip report.
Nukubati was wonderful. I went with some trepidation, given some negative info on various boards.
But, it was idyllic and relaxing. We flew in on a seaplane, and were greated by every single staff person, perhaps 40 people, meeting our plane with beautiful voices in song. Quite genuine and polynesian.
We've traveled the world (stayed at many Andrew Harper recommended luxury hideaways) and while Nukubati was a not a Four Seasons in luxury, it was very charming. and Service was great.
Our honeymoon bure was an individual unit, right on the beach. At low tide it was a bit mucky, but generally quite scenic. The island is tiny, you can walk about it in about 35 minutes.
The best part of the place is that there is NO scheduling. Whenever you want to eat, they are there to fix your meal. Whenever you decide you'd like to go out to snorkel, there's a boat and personnel to take you out to the most magical soft and hard coral snorkeling. We've snorkeled off the Kenyan coast in the Indian Ocean and in Belize and Hawaii, and this was far, far better coral.
The trip to visit a local church on Sunday was terrific. Fijians are amazingly open. Beautiful acapella singing.
Coconut Grove on Taveuni was disappointing, good food but quite basic rooms and little privacy.
Maravu, on the other hand, was quite comfortable. But frankly, we missed the castaway nature of Nukubati.
I think they are using Luxury Link as a promotion to get their hotel more well known.
By the way, the towels weren't thin at all.

Bula!
My husband and I went to Nukubati as part of our honeymoon trip to Fiji, and absolutely LOVED it. It was the perfect antidote to the wedding planning frenzy.
As taosgal said, the greeting is pheomenal, and they send you off again in the same fashion. What she left out was the drinks in the coconuts and the "escort" to your bure... wonderful.
This wasn't just arrival, this is how they are the whole time we were there. I SWEAR, they would've even brushed our teeth for us if we had asked! Attentive, nice, friendly, we were really impressed!
Our bure was about midway down the beach, and even at low tide we did have a strip of sand, but yes, it's true, if you're looking for a beach, this isn't the place for you.
One of our favorite highlights of the day is when they would stop by our bure with the champagne and canapes for enjoying the sunset.
However, if you're looking for delicious food, fabulous diving/snorkeling, PEACE AND QUIET... and wonderful massages in a beachfront bure, this is an amazing place. We hadn't even left yet and were planning a trip back someday.
The caveat:
If you're looking for a "resort" more in the American sense, go to a Sheraton or something of that nature. There are no clubs, no organzied anything, no tvs, etc. One couple while we were there (from LA) warned us upon arrival that there was nothing to do, and to grab a book.
It's not for everyone, but if you're there to relax, to enjoy the fishing/diving, it can't be beat, especially for the $.
From here we went to Moody's Namenalala, suppposedly one of the best diving destinations in Fiji, or the world, for that matter, and in my opinion, it was a sore dissapointment after Nukubati's reefs. (Of course, after swimming with Manta rays, I was spoiled!)
Hope this helps someone.
Oh, and the towels were not thin, and the sheets were not at all scratchy, either.
