Oh that's good for me, I often go to Houston. What a shame they didn't drop LA instead of San Fran; LA that must be one of the worst airports to transit in the world!
LAX is one of the world's worst airports full stop.
At the Bradley International terminal, I once made the mistake of thinking that I could get something to eat after going through immigration and security, there's virtually nothing there, its just an ugly shell of a building.
I am not sure that the A380 can land in SF Susan7. But they should bulldoze the Bradley International Terminal or for that matter the whole of LAX airport. Dreadful place and dreadful staff.
Thank you that information, as many of us are beginning to plan our summer trips to Oz and NZ.
It's too bad for those of us in SF. At least we will still have direct flights from SF to Auckland on Air New Zealand.
It is a big drag having to connect through LAX, in so many ways.
Suggest that anyone going through LAX in the future review the airport website for places to eat.
What Geordie has posted is no longer true.
Like all airports, LAX is in a constant state of renovation. The recent renovation of the arrivals level at TBIT has been completed and Daniel's Bistro gets good reviews (outside security). Hours are approx 6:30 am to 10:30 pm Sam Adams Bistro is open until 1 am at Gate 121 inside security.
There is also a Maccas.
to search airport restaurants by terminal, click the column headings

Maccas!!!!!!!!!! Is anyone that desperate?
I think Geordie was referring to places to eat inside the secure area and not outside.
The one good thing about LAX is that there are many really good airport hotels within a short distance of the airport and regular transport to those hotels.
Last year I went through SF and found that the hotel bus came only once every hour and was miles away from the airport and to make matters worse their elevator/lift was not working.
There are dining places both inside and outside security now.
There are more choices outside security, though, so if you have a choice eat first.
Maccas is popular in Australia, isn't it? It stays open until 2 am when many of the other spots are closed.
Sam Adams is not a bistro, it's a bar, maybe the name should be a hint, also I've never seen a Maccas airside, I believe your incorrect with this information
As I said before, there is virtually nothing past security, even the worlds smallest duty free shop is always shut when I pass through
Maccas is probably popular with mothers who want to entertain their young children, with adolescents who would not know how to cook and men whose wives won't cook. Everyone else who can cook would never darken their doors, why would we when you can get best quality hamburgers in Australia at other places and not the cardboard variety.
Well, damn!
Have to adjust my trip planning.
I saw that Qantas were going to fly to DFW, but I didn't realise it was at the expense of San Francisco!
Does anyone know if it's actually a Qantas plane that will fly to Dallas or if it's a codeshare arrangement? Also is it Sydney to Dallas non-stop? Surely that's too far. Where would the plane stop enroute? More direct flights to the USA out of Melbourne would be great for us.
Kay
It appears to be a direct flight from Sydney/Brisbane to DFW and the prices are extremely attractive for us at least.
From the Qantas website - I notice that the Brisbane route picks up the outward flight in Sydney (at least when I tried for a random May date) but there is a QF8 that returns direct to Brisbane from Dallas.
Flight QF 7
Operated by Qantas
Departure: Sydney
Terminal 1
Date: Fri 20 May 11
Time: 13:25
Arrival: Dallas Fort Worth
Domestic Terminal
Date: Fri 20 May 11
Time: 13:50
Meal: Lunch / Refreshment
Stopover: -
Total duration: 15h 25m
Aircraft type: Boeing 747-400 -
My guess is that that will be like the Qantas MEL/LAX/JFK flight-the number will tell you if it's a Qantas plane or codeshare with AA-some flights use Qantas from LAX to New York and some don't.
The flights are Qantas planes (747s).
The outward route is SYD-DFW nonstop, return is DFW-BNE-SYD (not enough range to do DFW-SYD nonstop).
After seeing about this, I checked the times and routes. Although rough on our SF friends that the DFW route is at their expense, a DFW flight is fantastic for me! A short 1 hour (or so) hope to DFW, then a settle in for the flight to Australia.
I plugged in some dates and could get two round trip to Cairns from Kansas City, MO for less than $3000 USD (that's for both tickets, not each!. Unfortunately, family circumstances prevent us from making such plans at the moment, but I can't tell you how tempting it is to buy tickets!
