If you already have an unlocked, triband or quadband GSM phone, why not just buy a SIM card for it?
When you land in AKL there is a vodafone store in the lobby of the arrivals hall just outside of customs on the right hand side. You can purchase a SIM card for a nominal fee, I think I paid $29NZ three years ago and it includes $10nz in prepaid usage. Register it online at http://www.vodafone.co.nz/plans/prepay/prepay-10-credit.jsp and you will get an additional $10nz bonus.
At that location, they will also help you activate it, so it will be ready to use when you walk away.

Unfortunately my iphone 4 is not unlocked and not GSM either and that's why I thought a prepaid phone would be easire since we will be driving all over N & S Islands.
Thanks for you tip.
