Phone card/prepaid phone

Heading to Australia & New Zealand soon for our first trip there. Thinking we need a phone in case rental car has problems or need to call one of our hotels. Our phone is an old fashioned/ no data flip phone. Would a SIM card bought in Australia work on this phone or do I Need either a phone card or prepaid phone for use in both countries in case of emergency for just 1 month.......don't need lots of minutes. What would be our best option?? I am clueless when it comes to phones! Any help would be appreciated.
