Perth, Red Center itinerary - need help!

Hi,

We are planning a trip to Perth and Uluru in Oct. Rough itinerary is as follows

Day 1 arrive in Perth
Day 2,3 Perth
Day 4 - either drive to Margaret River OR take train to Kalgoorlie
Day 5 - depends on choice made
Day 6 back to Perth
Day 7 to Alice
Day 8,9,10 Alice , Ayers Rock including Macdowells range and Kings canyon
Day 11 to Perth
Day 12 - fly back to singapore

How does this sound? Should we choose Kalgoorlie or Margaret River as we will have time for only one of these.

How much time is needed to do the Alice, Uluru leg? We can add 1 more day to the trip if required.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

On my visit to Uluru, I spent two nights which gave me two full days - perfect for all the walks and hikes I wanted to do. It takes the better part of a day to get from the Alice to Uluru, especially if you want to make stops along the way. Not sure you have enough time for both Uluru and Kings Canyon unless you are only interested in a few photo ops at each place.

It's going to take you most of Day 7 just to get from Perth to AS, so that day is out. You'll want a full day (Day 8) is AS. You'll spend at least 6 hours getting to Kings Canyon on Day 9, so that leaves you just the afternoon for sightseeing/hiking. It will take you about 4 hours to get from Kings Canyon to Yulara Village (at Uluru) on Day 10, so that leaves just part of one day to see Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Adding one more day to this itinerary will help, but it's still going to be a rather rushed trip.

Thanks for the feedback.

I now have a more fundamental question after reading several reviews of Uluru. Is it really worth travelling all the way there or is our time in Australia better spent elsewhere? We have a 11 year old girl with us, not sure if she will enjoy this part of the trip.

I would love to go visit the area around Cairns/Daintree again however it is such a long journey from Perth so probably have to choose places closer to Perth. Any suggestions?

If you are looking for the underwater experience, there is Ningaloo Reef up the coast in Western Australia. Adelaide and Kangaroo Island are also a similar-length plane ride from Perth compared to Alice Springs. Not sure what you're looking for.

What are your interests? It depends on what kind of thing you are looking for to help make the call between Margaret River or Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie and Margaret River are like chalk and cheese.

I have several trip reports posted here for WA, including one for Kalgoorlie and several for Margaret River if you'd like to get an idea of what each offers. Just click on my screen name and scroll down through my trip reports if interested.

Margaret River area should be lovely that time of year with the wildflowers. The south west is heavily forested with wonderful beaches everywhere and so would be quite a contrast to Alice Springs and the outback. Lots of kid friendly activities all the way down to Augusta. But Kalgoorlie is very interesting too. Which appeals to you more: outdoor activities or history? Perhaps you should forgo Uluru and do them both.

I'm an Australian and only got around to visiting 'the Rock' last year. It was spectacular and right at the top of my travel experiences. We took our 11 yr old son and two exchange students. They all loved it just as much as we did.
It's hard to describe the sheer beauty of the Red Centre
Here's a link to my blog of that trip
