One day in Sydney

I'm visiting Australia the first week of June. My flight lands in Sydney at 8:00 a.m. and I have until 5 pm until my next flight on to New Castle. If you had just one day in Sydney and you'd never been before, what would you do and why? I'm up for whatever but I would like to have lunch somewhere while I'm out and about.

You're going to be a bit tired and jetlagged so I'd include some walking. I'd take a taxi to the Botanical Gardens, walk along the foreshore to the Opera House, then to Circular Quay, and the Rocks. Along the way, there are plenty of places to get a coffee and some lunch but my choice would the café on the top floor at the Museum of Contemporary Art near Circular Quay. Great views over the harbour, the bridge and the ferries. You could always get a ferry from Circular Quay to Darling Harbour and then a taxi back to the airport.

We had a weekend in Sydney a few weeks ago to celebrate daughters 30th. Our plane landed at 9am and we caught a taxi to our hotel at Circular Quay/the Rocks area. We dropped off our bags and walked to the ferries at Circular Quay. We caught one to the zoo because our Granddaughter was with us. It really is lovely sitting on the ferry travelling on the harbour. I would recommend hopping on one and doing a trip around the sites of the harbour. Definitely have lunch around that area though. As Marg said there are plenty of cafes etc on the harbour to sit and enjoy the view of the Opera House and the Bridge.

Our taxi trip back to the airport next day was good but driver said there is always a jam late afternoon getting into the airport. There was even on a Sunday.

Perhaps a train would be better. We had 6 people so a train was going to cost us more than a maxi taxi but for one person the train will be cheaper and perhaps quicker.

Australia is so so beautiful. Definitely try to find some cool places to eat in Sydney using tripadvisor. And of course you must visit tourist monuments. For easier orientation around the city I recommend Sygic maps and navigation http://www.sygic.com/en/gps-navigation-australia It is pretty good covered and some sights of the city are even painted in 3D.
