O.K., when its 12 noon in Sydney, what time is it in New York?

Hi there - The title of my message says it all. I'm deciding whether to get some phone cards or just stick to internet cafes to keep in touch with friends and family. If the time/day difference doesn't work, we'll just forget the phone calls. Thanks for this and ALL your advice.

Sorry - it's 2:30 pm Saturday in Washington DC and in Sydney Australia it's 3:30 am on SUNDAY. We took a phone card from Sam's with us but found the internet cafes to be very inexpensive and everywhere. We kept in touch with family and friends and kept everyone abreast of what we were doing. I pulled up my mailbox (on Yahoo) with no problem and received all messages. The time difference as you can see is difficult.

Thank you both. I'll check out that site but I think I'll forget those phone cards and stick to internet cafes. Again, thanks.

Hi Patty,
I'm not sure if Australia changes their clocks for Daylight Savings time but currently Sydney is 14hrs ahead of US Eastern Standard time. At I type this, it's just before 6pm Sat. night here and timeanddate.com says it's nearly 8am in Sydney, Canberra,Melbourne. It's a half hour later in Adelaide and Darwin.

I am really confused....Debbie stated that the time difference is 14 hr, but her scenerio makes it 16 hrs: 12 + 4 = 16.

Patti said that it is 13 hrs difference.

WHAT IS THE TRUE TIME DIFERENCE?

US east coast time is 14 hours behind australian eastern standard time.
That means when it is 12 noon in sydney it is 10 pm the previous day in new york.
A t the ned of october when australia goes to daylight saving sydney will be 15 hours ahead.

The best time to call new york from sydney is around 9.00 am when it is around 7.00 pm in new york.

Of course new york is 5 years ahed in terms of style, fashion, crime, selfishness!

14 hrs is correct (currently.) However, Australia is a mess when it comes to figuring out what time it is in any given part of the country. There are three time zones, one that is 30 minutes off from the rest and Daylight Savings is observed only in the eastern half of the country (someone correct me if I'm wrong.) For those states that observe Daylight Savings, they start on different dates. Tasmania just turned their clocks ahead this weekend while the rest of the states in the AEST time zone will do so in about three weeks.

Want to know for sure what time it is in Sydney? Go to www.2ue.com.au. That's the website for a talk radio station in Sydney. They show the current time and date on their home page.

Amy--
Good thing I don't teach math! When it's noon in NYC, it's 2am in Sydney, not 4! Thanks for catching my mistake

Sorry if I caused any confusion!!

As debbie recommended just go to www.timeanddate.com/worldclock - its a very handy web site. Some states will be moving to daylight saving in the last weekend of October however not all eastern states do - Queensland doesn't.

And South Australia(in the middle) does have daylight saving.

Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia do not.

Australia is no different to other large countries which span several time zones. I notice that the USA has 4 zones and Canada 5 all the time. Basically Australia has 3 zones during winter (Eastern, Central and Western) and 5 during summer!!

for example:
Queensland would be 8.00 am
NSW, Victoria and Tasmania 9.00 am
South Australia 8.30 am
Northern Territory 7.30 am
Western Australia 6.00 am

(I think!!)

Hi again,
Thanks to all of you. That website is fantastic. I'm just about all set for our trip. I didn't think I could get more excited, but the excitement seems to grow each day. Can't wait.
