NZ Car rentals

I have researched on cars and am more confused than ever. There are positives and negative postings for Apex, and little for Pegasus, Kiwi, EZY, or Omega. Can someone help me? Is there a difference between these companies or are they about the same for the second tier rentals. Also should I make certain to have chains in the north island? We will there in Aug. and will be driving to National Park.I appreciate any help you can give me. We will be renting in mid July until mid Aug. for 22 days, beginning in Christchurch and ending in Auckland. We would like to drop the car at the ferry and pick up another car in the North Island. Thanks.
