New Zealand question

We will be in New Zealand in a little less than one week. I'm so excited! One question - I realize that the electricity in NZ is 240V 50 hz. I have a hairdryer that can be modified to be 240 V. Will it fit into the NZ type outlets? In other words, is the outlet in NZ the same as in the USA? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Jennifer,
No, standard US plugs won't fit in NZ outlets (although some larger hotels may have "universal" outlets which can accommodate them.)
Plug adaptor kits are inexpensive and easy to find (most luggage shops, for example) and you may find one at the airport, too. I'm sure you can find one in NZ, maybe at the Auckland airport.
Depending on where you stay, the hotel may also lend you a dryer if there isn't one in the room.

John is right; if you can, use an N.Z. hairdryer rather than bringing one with you. I had an American travel model that supposedly could be set to N.Z. voltage and outlet configuration -- it STILL blew up on me! See if you can get one from the hotel; it's not as easy to pick up a cheap appliance in N.Z. as it is in the U.S.

I agree with the previous poster. My wife can't live with out her hair dryer and curler. So she takes her favourites with her to Australia. The hairdryer could be changed from 110 to 240 volts, blew up first morning. Don't know why or how. So off to Target we went and got an inexpensive one for the remainder of the trip.
Save on space and weight, leave em at home.

No Jennifer, your hairdryer is presumably a 2 prong. In NZ you need an adapter that has 3 prong at one end and 2 at the other. In other words, the 3 prong is the end that you plug into the wall in NZ.

As per the above answer, not all NZ plugs are 3 prong! Quite often they only have the top 2 prongs - although an adaptor must be able to hold the 3 prongs.
Seems like a lot of complicated varied answers for a simple question. An adaptor can be bought very cheaply. If you're worried about voltages, get one with a reset button to cut it out before it blows up.
No problem!
