It's very hard to create an itinerary without more information. You'll want to tell us your interests or read some of the trip reports included and then ask questions (indiancouples is very good).

I'd also suggest the www.newzealand.com driving routes section for starters.

thanks and a good point!! we arrive into auckland from santiago on the 13th March at 3.45am. this date may change as it is looking increasingly unlikely that we will be able to go to machu pichu, but thats a whole other story! we fly out from christchurch 3 weeks later to sydney. we want a pretty good mix of both urban and rural activities. also, does anyone have any tips on hiring a car in new zealand? which is the best car hire firm to go with??? all hints, tips, ideas greatly appreciated. thanks to all for reading.

Regarding renting cars in NZ - be prepared for a huge excess (deductible). APEX is a good company, as are all the majors. APEX gives you the option of renting older cars, which cost less and have lower deductibles. Some US credit cards (such as Visa) will cover the excess in case of loss, but you say you're coming from Santiago.... so this may not apply. Be sure to ask the rental car company to charge you in NZ currency, not the currency of your country - this will save you paying a higher conversion fee.

The OP is asking about New Zealand, not Australia.
