New Plymouth: fly via Wellington or Auckland?

I'm coming to New Zealand next month to see an exhibition at Govett Brewster Gallery in New Plymouth. I'm flying from Sydney, does it make any difference if I go via Auckland airport or Wellington? For example, I'm wondering if Auckland International airport is close to the domestic airport.

If you fly to Wellington there is no need to leave the terminal to catch a flight to New Plymouth, and the same on your return, of course.
Auckland involves a walk of 10 minutes from one terminal to next, or a bus ride if you don't feel up to the walk.
