new HK airport-hotel transfers
Hi! Just wondering what taxi/bus availability is like around Hong Kong, as i've never been there. We'll need something from the new airport to our hotel in Kowloon, which isn't too much of a stress as we won't be in a hurry, but also need from our hotel to airport. would like to keep cost down, hence the taxi idea.
thanks for your help

Jess- good taxi/MRT transport in HK. I take the taxi when i am too tired from my shopping. Around 11pm it might be a bit hard as there's lots of people going home as most shop are closed but if you wait you can get one. From the new airport, i believe there will be coaches/airport buses to town made available else take the taxi which by then will be more expensive as the distance is much longer than the old airport. I suggest the airport bus if you are budget conscious else the taxi.

Actually, the new airport isn't open yet. (A friend tells me they've been saying it's just about to open for years now.)

I'm also happy to report that one of the most pleasant surprises I encountered in Hong Kong (I just returned home on Friday) was the simplicity, availability, and affordability of the public transportation system. There are buses, minibuses, subways, trams, and ferries galore. They're incredibly easy to figure out--even the numerous bus routes (which post the route details and schedule at every stop). For less than US$3, for example, there are three (I think) buses that go between hotel areas and the airport. The ferry from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon works out to something absurd like 15 cents. "Deluxe" (meaning air-conditioned) class ferry tickets for the hour ride from Hong Kong to Cheung Chau were a little over US$2.

For comparison, consider this: A cab from the airport to our hotel in Wan Chai cost almost HK$300. The bus we took from the hotel to the airport was HK$19 apiece. It was also faster.

Pack lots of cool clothing, and have a great time!

Hi Jess, Welcome to Hong Kong!!
Our new airport is due to be opened on Jul 6, 98. So if you arrive on/after that, you will be able to enjoy all the new facilities.
As the new airport is much much far away from the city than the existing one, the transport will be getting more expensive. The Airport will be linked by train, bus and taxi. And their availability and degree of safety should not be a concern.

The single way taxi fare to Kowloon (say Tsimshatsui) would be around HK$250 (US$32). The train will cost around HK$70 (US$8.9). Bus is much much cheaper. When you depart, actually you can check out at the railway stations (3 stations will have these facilities). When you arrive, you definitely will receive information from the Tourist Assoication advising you on the airport transport links.

Have an enjoyable stay here!
