I've been on all three. My favorite was Mitre Peak, but only because it was the last cruise of the day and there were only about 12 of us on the boat. All three operators pretty much offer the same cruise, you see the same sights regardless of boat operator.

Suggest you go either early or late in the day, thus avoiding the bus rush of mid day.

I'd also like to know everyone's favorite company. Good question!

Sorry, I mistook Cruize Milford for Real Journeys. I've been on Real Journeys, the Red Boat and Mitre Peak. Cruize Milford is a new one to me.

Hello - I agree with the first post, in that all of the operators offer pretty much the same cruise. You will however get a slightly different persepctive by spending an overnight on Milford Sound and your best option here would be with Real Journeys. They offer 2 vessels, both hold 60 or 61 passengers the key difference is the Milford Mariner has private cabins with ensuites whereas the Milford Wanderer has bunk style cabins, with 4 guests per room. You will avoid the crowds and experience a level of peace and tranquility on the Sound that is unbelieveable. You will not feel rushed and have a lovely chance to truly experience the beauty of the Fiordland region. Safe travels, [email protected]

To those who have done the under water observatory - do you recommend it? How long does it last and what does it entail?

Thanks!

I second Lisa' endorsement of the overnight cruise on Milford Sound. It is a much more relaxed, pleasant experience. You spend more time on the sound and have it virtually all to yourself. Even the ride to and from the sound is more enjoyable because you are going against the bulk of tourist traffic and don't have to share the "photo stops" with lots of other people. On the cruise we kayaked for about an hour; saw dolphins, penguins and even two humpback whales; and enjoyed two excellent meals and good service on the boat.

Hi,

Yes, ARay's correct about the experience on the overnight (IMO), it's so quiet and peaceful when all the daytrippers are gone.

As far as companies go, I've been using Real Journeys for 12 years and have always had great feedback from clients.

Hope this is helpful!

Are they very punctual? I am worried about arriving late for the overnight cruise!

We used Real Journeys to see both Milford and Doubtful and found them to be extremely punctual and well organized. All departure and arrivals times were pretty much on the nose.

Thanks, I think I may have to catch an earlier flight in this case.
