Melbourne to Adelaide via GOR

Melbourne to Adelaide via GOR
We're planning to drive from Melbourne to Adelaide via the GOR in early April. We've allowed 3 nights (4 days) for the trip. Is that adequate time, and where would the best places be to stop overnight along the way?

mroski, three nights is a nice length of time in which to do Melbourne to Adelaide without feeling that you are rushing along at all.
I know that you are new to this site and if you do a search on the Australia forum for the GOR you will find a ton information on places to stop at overnight and how to pace your trip.

Apollo Bay is a good first stopover after having had lunch at Lorne.
The Otway Fly www.otwayfly.com.au is worth checking out in that area and then it is onto the Twelve Apostles and then the next stopover Pt. Fairy. Sometimes whales can be observed at Warrnambool, just before Pt. Fairy. I would then suggest the next stopover to be either Mt. Gambier or Robe. Mt. Gambier has a Blue Lake and Robe is famous for crayfish (lobster). The wine producing area of Coonawarra is also thereabouts.
Incidentally Kangaroos can usually be seen at the Anglesea Golf Course. Anglsea being a small town before Lorne. It is the 75th. anniversary of the GOR this year.

That's probably one of the most FAQs here. No matter - you have it just about right time wise.
As for places to stay. Won't recommend the places I stayed as they were budget. But I'm a bit of a hoarder and recently rediscoverd a copy of the SMH's Best 52 weekends away from Oct 2005. And from that I'd like to pass on these suggestions (haven't been to either myself - but, hey, they sound great).

Hi - in addition to the Twelve Apostles make sure you stop in at Maits Rest (an ancient rainforest) and also Loch Ard Gorge which has an amazing story attached to it. Both of these are located just west of Apollo Bay and before you reach the Twelve Apostles.
