Looking for a few good places in Melbourne to eat at that the locals enjoy --good portions and inexpensive! Are staying in the CBD but can go anywhere by bus. Don't want to go to the touristy restaurants. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I was in Melb a few months ago (I'm from Perth) and I would highly recommend the following places. I don't think they're very touristy at all:

- Stokehouse City (CBD) - a bit pricey but worth it!
- Krimper Cafe (CBD) - this is quite hidden in a laneway and I wouldn't have even known it existed expected I did a coffee tour and it was once of the places we visited. I headed back there with my hubby for brekky on our last day and the french toast was to die for.
- Harry & Frankie (Port Melbourne) - awesome wine bar where you sit at a communal table, choose a bottle (or glass) of wine from over 600 bottles and eat gorgeous tapas style food.

Melbourne has so many hidden places that's its worth just walking down the laneways and see what you stumble across. I think a lot of tourists would head to places like Lygon St and South Bank so I tend to avoid those places when we visit.

Compared to Perth, Melbourne's food scene is mostly good value and tasty!

I always take visitors to Brunettis in Carlton for the coffee and cake display - also good other food - crowded but full of locals

Chinatown is great for yum cha, walk a few streets and pick one of the busy restaurants.

For fantastic Vietnamese food, try Victoria St in Richmond. Again, pick any busy restaurant.

Cafe Di Stasio in St Kilda has a set price lunch, $35 for two courses, a glass of wine and coffee...excellent Italian seasonal menu.

For the Vietnamese ones in Victoria street look for one with Asian customers
Belles chicken in Gertrude Street , Fitzroy
Naked for Satan with its Naked in the Sky - great views of the Northern inner skyline , tapas food 285 Brunswick street Fitzroy
Hellenic Republic Lygon Street east Bruswick - great Greek food
East Elevation - 351 lygon street east Bruswick - chocolate factory and great food in an old factory

All these on tram lines !

State of Grace in Collins Street - very eclectic - we had a fabulous pre show dinner there. You should visit Fall from Grace whilst there. The secret is in the bookcase.

We had a stupendous brekky/brunch at Phamish at St Kilda.

Also had a couple of stupendous brekky/brunches at Florentino in Bourke Street - loved eating here - just like being back in Europe, with cheeky little waiters....I better stop.

The Laneways are also an awesome little treasure of culinary delights.

Melbourne is awash with amazing cafes and restaurants, it's hard to find ones that are not good.

Recently, tapas (small portions) have taken off and there are a few restaurants in Melbourne that excel in this space. Bomba Downstairs is one of them in the city. Check out our review below.

Chinese food is another great option and Chinatown is the best place to sample some of the best Asian food in town. My favourite is Shanghai Dumpling Village. They're cheap and have amazing dumplings. Go early to avoid waiting in a queue.

Last but not the least, you must try some Japanese food as Melbourne has the best value and tastiest Japanese food in Australia. My favourite is Yoyogi on Swanston Street between Lonsdale and Bourke Streets.
