Maori Regatta question

Hello -
I'm planning on going to the Maori regatta on the North Island in March 2007 and want to find a local travel company that's repsectful of the Maori culture and that my money would be going to locals and not a US company. Any ideas of NZ travel groups?

Thanks!

Greetings RMBoston:

Well, New Zealand is a very easy country to travel to. My wife and I have been there three times [from Canada]. The first time we reserved our space in advance using an agent at home. That person dealt through Air New Zealand. I am sure you can do the same.

AAA in of America is AA in New Zealand. Your American membership will be honoured in NZ. They put out a book of accommodations. Also, Jasons do the same. Find both on the net.

The second time we went, I made my own reservations from Canada by e-mail. No problems. Wanganui where the 'triti' was signed and where it is celebrated each year [I think this is the regatta you refer to?] is a small community. Unlike Auckland, the locals will more often than not take you at your word. I have found them to be very honest so you can deal direct. Have all your money go to the locals and do not worry.

The third time we went we also booked ourselved. We are going for a fourth time this winter and have already booked those places we know that we wish to stay at. The other spots we will book as we go. The government's travel assistance will book for you at no charge.

Have a great trip, I expect that I will next winter.

Hi There

I assume by the March regatta you are referring to the one at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia, just north of Hamilton in the Waikato.

I did a bit of hunting for contact details and could only find the following link which is two years out of date.

http://www.hamiltonevents.co.nz/even...&Year=2005

You could try those contact details, but they may well be defunct. Of course if you contact the Hamilton Visitors Centre they should be able to help you.

There have been major changes within Maoridom at Ngaruawahia this year. The Maori queen who was head of the Kingitanga movement, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu died earlier this year and her son, Tuhetia has now taken over. This may or may not have an impact on next years celebrations, I do not know.

Best bet is the Hamilton Visitor Centre or the number at Ngaruawahia on the link.

Hope this helps.

And thank you, Kiwi Act! As you can see, I'm new to the message boards because my replies are not going where I want them to...

THANK YOU. Yes, the regatta is the Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia. I wll check out the visitor's link and number. Great information.

Thank you both, Kiwi and Woodie

Cheers,
RM
