Hi Tassie Fodorites,
I'm visiting Tasmania with my husband and elderly parents and we are looking for a nice "Aussie" B&B convenient to the Launceston area, for 2 nights. Budget is up to $200 per couple, but the interaction with owners /guests and wildlife/scenery are the goals.
From there we plan to drive to the east coast and make our way to Hobart. Any suggestions for something similar in a site convenient to several day trips of that coast and parks (2 to 3 nights) would be appreciated.

There are a few bed and breakfast places listed for Launceston and the surrounding area on www.wotif.com
When we were there we stayed right in Launceston at Hatherley House, a remodeled Victorian in a wonderful old neighborhood. It had lovely gardens.
The rates on Wotif are greatly discounted, however, these are last minute bookings, so you can only book up to two weeks in advance.
Of course, you don't have much wildife in Launceston, but the countryside is not very far away.

Yep that website was really good - there was not one place in the whole of the state of Tasmania on it. I have been using http://www.discovertasmania.com/
for some of my planning as I really think that local websites are the best. Then asking for specifics on this forum narrows things right down. I am getting some great ideas this way.

The 'chrisjones' post is advertising and has appeared on quite a few threads here - hopefully Fodor's editors will remove all of 'em.

Pat, stayed in the small village of Westbury, about 20mins drive from Launceston airport, at a delightful B&B called The Olde Coaching Inn (built in 1833) which consisted of two big bedrooms and living/kitchen area, with open fireplace, in between. As the guest accommodation (max 4 guests) was separate from the owner's wing, it was very private with its own sunny verandah. The newer guestroom had its own ensuite, and the other its own bathroom off the living area. Rates between $75 and $90 per double per night.

We really enjoyed the experience of staying in the converted stables of the original 1833 coaching inn, with our bathroom the old butchery!

On the east coast we stayed at St. Helens - is that of interest?

Westbury is on the western side of Launceston, the opposite direction to the airport which is in the east. I think it would take more like 45 mins to reach it from the airport, if not longer. Woolmers offers individual cottage accommodation, but not too much interaction with other guests and many of the cottages have stairs. It's also quite a long way away from Launceston. My suggestion would be Kurrajong House in High Street, Launceston.
www.kurrajonghouse.com.au. We have stayed there several times and it is all ground floor, has a beaut breakfast with other guests and is quiet. Lovely owners too. If you want to stay on the east coast and where there is wild life, I would suggest Freycinet Lodge at Coles Bay. http://www.freycinetlodge.com.au/ They have special deals up to the end of September and it is just gorgeous. They have a handicapped suite if that would make things easier for your parents too. they also run various wildlife and nature activities for guests.

I just checked www.wotif.com and it listed 55 hotels, motels and bed and breakfast accommodations in the Launceston area alone.
It also listed 7 different accommodations for Cradle Mountain; 24 different accommodations for Freycinet and the East Coast; 76 different accommodations for the Hobart area; and so on. The prices are deeply discounted.

It was not your suggestion Diamontina that was in doubt but some other poster who was flogging some US website which didn't have anything about Tassie on it. Wotif is the website of choice when looking for discount accommodation, especially in Australia.

Mmmm, francophiletasmania – I suggested Westbury as the OP’s thread heading is a B&amp;B <u>near</u> (not ‘in’) Launceston – and the Discovertasmania link itself includes the info “The Inn is conveniently located about 25-minutes drive from <u>central</u> Launceston (35 kilometres/22 miles).” The Tas Govt Tourist website says &quot;The Olde Coaching Inn Westbury ... just 20 minutes to Launceston airport,&quot; which is where we collected our hire car and drove to Westbury from. Guess it depends on how often you stop to admire the gorgeous scenery
