It's a game even Australians can play! Surely there are places you still want to see in your immense and diverse country.
I need to get away from the Lounge, it's taking an ugly turn lately, and even though I won't be back to Australia any time soon, a girl can dream.
So here goes. If I had unlimited time and money, these are places I would want to spend time in, visit, and these are some of the things I would like to do.
Spend more time, LOTS more time, in Daintree and the Atherton Tablelands
Stay overnight at the Mareeba Wetlands
Do a liveaboard snorkeling trip on the Great Barrier Reef
Roadtrip further away from the coast with a jumping off spot of the Atherton Tablelands
Golf, anywhere in Australia, to say I did
Spend more time in the Capertee
Visit Melbourne. During the Australian Open. And go to the Open!
Do the coastal walk in Royal National Park
Work up my nerve to do the Sydney Harbor Bridge climb
Drive the Great Ocean Road
Visit Kakadu
Visit Uluru
Fly over the Kimberlys
Visit Western Australia--preferably during Wildflower season
Take some of Melnq8's wonderful drives and walks in WA
Go to Tasmania
Oh good grief, I could go on on and on. I need to win the lottery.

I live in Melbourne but would love to have the time to travel and take my time. Doesn't happen when you only have so many weeks leave per year.

Just off the top of my head - two weeks in Sydney just exploring, drive across the Nullabor and down to the south, meander up the east coast all the way until the road runs out, head up towards Darwin and across to Broome stopping along the way as much as we wanted. Oh, and I'd have to buy a pink diamond from the Argyle diamond mine
I agree with you, I could go on and on!
Kay
And I would just love to have the time and the money to re-visit all the wonderful places I have been to including Darwin, Kakadu, Katherine, Cairns everywhere, Alice Springs, Uluru, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Echuca,Canberra, and all the places I have yet to visit. Oh well, a girl can dream . . .
I'd like to visit the Kimberley, maybe traveling overland from to Broome to Darwin.
Since we are dreaming, I would love to spend about 8 months on my next trip. I think I would like to park myself for about 2 months somewhere on the Mornington Peninsula - maybe the town of Mornington or Sorrento. After 2 months exploring in that area, I would like to do the same in Caloundra, just north of Brisbane. Another 2 months would be spent on the West coast somewhere around Perth with the final 2 months spent near Adelaide. I figure 2 months in each place would allow time for lots of exploring and just kicking back. As dottyp stated above, oh well, a girl can dream!
I would like to spend more time in south west, WA and in Tasmania. I only spent two months in the former and two weeks in the latter.
In the Kimberly I would like to have access to a helicopter and a small motorbike to carry on-board. This helicopter would be based on my private yacht on which I would have some scientific staff to add to the experience.
Nice to see Western Australia on these wish lists, as many visitors give it a pass since we're soooooo far away.
More exploring of the Kimberleys for me and also explore Tasmania
I'll play along!! Here's my list:

Another trip to the Kimberley's (perhaps along with AlanJG...that sounds fab!!)
Great Ocean Road
Southwest WA
Flinders Ranges
Kakadu
Byron Bay and surrounds
And Tasmania....this one coming up at Christmastime.
dkw, I'm with you. My first thought was, I want to go with Alan!
And now I have additional places to dream about and new places to look up!
Toucan and dkw, I've thought about the chef, ornithologist, botanist, geologist, ichthyologist and entomologist I want on board. I've got the skipper in mind too.
Once we are done over there I'd like to shift to the Torres Strait. Lots of places there which I could explore more fully.
Pop this one on your list Toucan, Boodjamulla National Park (Lawn Hill) National Park, north west Queensland, getting close to NT border. Its a bit of a trek to say the least and you'll need a 4WD unless you fly in by light aircraft, but just a stunning spot.
Well, if I can dream about Alan's yacht and helicopter, I can add a 4WD to the list
OK Toucan2, on our way over from the Kimberley we can sail via the coast rather than directly and so visit Boodjamulla which is one of my absolute favourite places and home to one of the three species of Australian possums I've not seen. While there we can also volunteer on the Riversleigh fossil deposits while the paleontologists are working.
Alan, as soon as I win the lottery, you are on! What a fab trip that would be, wouldn't it?
Toucan2, buy me the winning ticket and I promise to share, honestly I do!
Melnq8, during my last trip in 2009, I said "on my next trip I must get to the west coast" so that has always been in my plan. Whenever my third trip takes place, I will definitely be using some of your great Trip Reports for some road trips south of Perth. You have been a good travel embassador for that part of the country.
That's good to hear Bgale, thank you! I look forward to reading all about it when you get around to making that third trip.
Reading another thread reminded me that I want to visit Coober Pedy. So add that to my list too!
Pat, Boodjamulla looks gorgeous. And it is listed as an Important Bird Area so my husband would be happy too. I'd have to buy that 4WD though, unsealed roads.
since we are dreaming - and no need to count the pennies, since we all have won the lotto! lol.
Here goes - we will travel the mid-qld area through rome and longreach and head to the lava tubes do the 'real' ozzie outback thing cruise past the coast to cool off then head over (either car or plane) to margaret river and sample some wine/food/surf then call into broome to walk to beach in the setting sun rays- you know like all the other tourists lol.
then cruise through to Darwin remember the cyclones and the bombing (pay our respects) and eat our way through the evening markets then take the scenic way through the centre then to birdsville pub -sign the walls.
tour through the lush green of the blue mountains take in the caves and then stay in sydney in a hotel with the best view and eat well and take in a show at the 'house' and somehow remember how to get home! lol
all in all about a couple of years on the road - wouldn't want to rush these things !!!
