Last minute itinerary/lodging help for family trip to Australia

Hi. My kids (ages 14 and 17) are going to Australia for the first time in late July. We fly into Sydney from LA and think we have the broad outlines for our Sydney itinerary because there are so many must-sees.
We plan to stay there four nights at the beginning of the trip and then one night before we head home.
That leaves us six nights for the bucket list part of our trip, the beaches/islands of the Great Barrier Reef. I simply can't decide how to divide up those days. I'm thinking four nights in Port Douglas and then a two night birthday splurge on one of the islands, probably Hayman and it's new One and Only resort.
So I'm looking for any and all suggestions/answers to my questions, especialy from people who have traveled there fairly recently.
1. Is this itinerary crazy or flawed in any way? The plan is to fy from Sydney to Cairns and then from Hamilton Island to Sydney but I'm open to any suggestions!
2. How would you divvy up four days in Port Douglas and is that the place you'd choose for a beachy vacation with side trips or are there better alternatives? We are used to southern California and Hawaii beach vacations if that gives any perspective. Definitely want to do a reef tour (we snorkel but aren't certified in scuba) and to see Whitehaven beach and probably go to Daintree.
3. Where would you stay or definitely not stay in Port Douglas if you had two teenagers?
4. Anybody have experience with teenagers and the island resorts ? We all kind of just want to end the trip doing nothing but hanging out on the beach/pool but I want to make sure none of us is bored and regrets the splurge.
