kangaroo Island in August-Too cold?
We are wondering if Kangaroo Island in August is advisable? Or will the weather ruin the stay? Also, is the "Top End" woth going to in August with 2 kids? Our primary interest is wildlife . Finally, are there rainforests around Cairns full of wildlife; and what island near Cairns is worth visiting? Thanks to one and all!!

Dear jj
Kangaroo Island is a definite Aussie highlight. The wildlife is truly amazing and August is not "cold"- take if from an expat Cnadian now living Down Under! It may rain at that time, but the temperature will never get below 65F.
The top End is just how you imagine Australia to be and definitely caters for children- a few recommendations include the jumping crocodile cruise at the Adelaide River (south of Darwin), cruise along the Katherine gorge, Mataranka hotsprings, and the wildlife in Kakadu National Park.
The rainforest near Cairns (Cape Tribulation) has beautiful birds and the occasional koala (although these are much more abundant in Kangaroo Island).
Green Island is close to Cairns and won't break the budget and it can be done as a day trip.
You will love what Australia has to offer. But keep in mind that your trip is covering a lot of territory so I hope you plan to stay awhile!!

Take if from an Adelaidian, Kangaroo Island is fantastic - no matter what the weather. So it rains a little? The wind will take your breath away so be sure to bring appropriate gear. Whilst on KI there are heaps of things to do - such as visit a honey farm (we have the best bees in the world), go to Seal Bay (literally hundreds of Seals), depending on where you stay you can usually hire mountain bikes (good for the kids) as there are good tracks around American River.

Have a fantastic time.
