My husband and I plan to fly from Sydney and welcome suggestions regarding going to Kangaroo Island. We have allowed a travel day and 2 full days to explore the island and then another travel day to head up towards Cairns area.
Questions? Should we fly to Melbourne and drive down the coast to the ferry or fly to Adelaide and then rent a car and take the ferry over. Or, should we fly to the island. Once there, can you recommend lodging and the best way to get around and see the beautiful and wonderful sights.
Thanks so much for your help.

Two days is barely enough! We spent ten and didn't see everything. You will get the highlights. Be sure to pick the things that are unlike anywhere else you have seen. For instance the cave are lovely but could be any where else. It is a deceptively large island.
BEWARE unless the roads have changed dramatically it takes much longer to drive around the Island. The gravel is made of iron oxide "balls" and it is like driving on ball bearings. AND it is very dusty.
With only two days, I would fly direct so you can spend more time on the island.
Kangaroo Island is amazing but it is a long way to go from Sydney if you next stop is Cairns. Do you have a particular reason for visiting it?
By the time you get to the aiports, wait around for your flight, fly, get your luggage and car you will have "wasted" the best part of day at each end.
There are equally good places to visit.
Food for thought.
Highlights would be walking on the beach with the sea lions and The Remarkables.
If you plan to take the ferry, check that the rental car company will allow it. Some do not allow their cars to be taken on the ferry to KI.
We flew and rented a car at Kingscote airport. We split our stay between Hanson Bay cabins on the west side of the island and a B&B in Penneshaw on the east side.
It sounds like you have 3 nights available, is that correct? I wouldn't do it if you have less time than that since you'll be coming from Sydney and heading to Cairns.
Make sure you go out at night to see the wildlife. Not at a bar either.
