Itinerary advice - Australia, 2+ wks with 3 y.o.

Jump to last reply

I admit to being a little lazy here, since normally I don't ask for itinerary advice until I've done a lot of my own research and come up with a proposed plan. :)

But given the size of Australia and all of the fabulous places we could go - I thought I'd get the ball rolling a little earlier this time... So I hope the Fodors collective braintrust can help!

We're considering a 2+ week trip, likely in late Oct or early November. We'll be traveling with our three year old, who is an experienced world traveler and pretty easy going. We tend to be more attracted to outdoorsy activities (hiking, wildlife, etc.) but are not opposed to the pleasures of large cities either - although our 3 y.o. will likely have little patience for the high culture of art museums, etc. yet. Aquariums, zoos, and childrens museums are more his speed right now. Our style of travel tends to be pretty fast paced - my itineraries usually glean the "You're doing too much!" comments, but we've always been happy with them in the end.

My initial thinking is Sydney, Adelaide, and Kangaroo Island, but I am wide open to other suggestions. I admit to being intrigued by Tasmania, too. Off the beaten track ideas are always good. For those traveling with children, things your kids have especially loved would be good.

I think we'll probably skip Cairns/GBR on this trip, to be explored at a later date, because my husband and I are divers and would like to experience diving there. However, it probably won't work with our little one and because there's a chance I may be pregnant at the time (and I've traveled all over the world during all trimesters of pregnancy, so beyond no SCUBA, that's not a factor in our itinerary planning).

Have at it, Fodorites - I can't wait to hear from you! And thanks in advance!
