We're flying from Queenstown to Christchurch for 3 nights before leaving for Sydney. We have a whale watching trip reserved for one afternoon. Is there any other reason to keep a car for all three days? Our flight for Sydney is remarkably early-- 6 am. Plus, we're staying at the Heritage Hotel and they charge $15 per day for parking.
is there a reasone to rent a car in Christchurch?

No.
I agree.
Small town.
It all depends on what you want to do...
Christchurch is compact, but if you have any interest whatsoever in exploring areas outside of the city center, a car really comes in handy.
We've never visited Christchurch without a car. We were just there a few weeks back and definitely needed a car to drive to Rakaia Gorge (about an hour from the city) and to drive from our motel to our favorite restaurants for dinner.
On past visits we've needed a car to drive to Akaroa, Waipara Valley, the Antartic Center, Sumner, Lyttelton, wineries, etc. YES, some of these can be reached by tour bus or public transport, but we prefer the flexibility of a car.
So, it really depends on you and what you want to see and do...
Have a good trip.
