Is French really spoken in Tahiti?
Hello. Does anyone know if French is actually spoken in Tahiti or whether, as in Haiti, only the well educated speak it, and the rest speak Tahitian? I ask because I am trying to plan a vacation with my bilingual daughter to a French speaking country, and France just doesn't seem like such a good idea right now.
Many thanks!

why on earth would France not be a good idea?
if you're thinking about the recent tragedy, it was of course a unique occurrence. in fact, given the increase in security measures, France is probably safer than it's been for years. if you are worried about Paris, there remains the rest of France, which is quite a big place.
Otherwise there are a number of other francophone places - Belgium, Luxembourg, part of Switzerland, quite a lot of the West Indies, and quite a lot of Africa including Tunisia.
By all means go to Tahiti, but go because you want to go there.

I work for the airlines and was in Paris last week for two days with no problems at all. There are no issues using the buses and metro so would go there and not think twice.
The whole world has its terror problems so be aware of your surroundings and enjoy your vacations.

Go to Paris. Friends just canceled their honeymoon to Tahiti due to the outbreak of mosquito borne Chikungunya. Check the US Center for Disease Control if you end up going to Tahiti; I wouldn't risk it.
