If we only have 12 nights in New Zealand, is it better to stick to just the South Island?

Would we be missing out on alot if we skip the North Island. We are planning a morotcycle trip for next January and only have about 12 nights in New Zealand.
We are both 30 years old and are interested in beautiful scenery, possibly sky diving, jet boating, heli-hiking, whale watching and wine tasting. Were not so much into the city thing, more activities and scenery.
We are trying to plan this trip early since it is the high season and are trying to use miles for our flights.

Any suggestions or opinions. In addition, we will be stopping in Fiji on our way back so the beach thing is New Zealand isn't so important. Thanks

Yes definitely head straight to the SI from Auckland. If you fly in early in the morning, I would catch a connecting flight the same day, since you are a bit jet lagged anyway. I've been able to use miles to get to Christchurch fairly easily, but Queenstown would be even better if that option is available.

Does anyone know of any reputable motorcycle rental companies? I have searched the internet and there are alot of them so it's hard to narrow down. We will be traveling independently, not on a tour.

It may already be time to ask for your FFaward. We had to call 330 (?331) days in advance to get them.

If you are coming from the US, you should try to get the ticket to CHC or QT, as mlgb says, if you decide to go there first.

And yes, stick to the SI for the 12 days.

Jed, thanks for the reply. We are going next January and can only book our flight, like you said, 330 days in advance which means that we would have to return no later than 1/14. I already checked, but thanks.

Yes.
I would fly into Christchurch and stay one night or directly drive to Kaikoura.
Kaikoura 2 nights
Westport or Punakaiki one night
Franz Josef 2 nights
Wanaka or Queenstown 3-4 nights
Te Anau or Sound overnight cruise 3 nights
Fly out from Queenstown

I don't understand. We booked our FF seats to NZ (on Air NZ through USAir) 330 days in advance. This outbound reservation was held until we booked the return, which was 3 weeks later. Fortunately, seats were available for the return. But we were not limited when we could return.

You don't have to answer, but to me, something doesn't add up.

Jed, I did't even think of having them book our outbound flight and then have the return flight booked later. I didn't ask them that. I only asked about the roundtrip flight. In that case, I'm sure we could do the same. Thanks for the info. The reason we would have to return by 1/14 is because that would be 330 days in advance. That's what I understood, I could have it wrong though.

I just want to make sure that your understanding is that the 330 is the earliest date when you can make the reservation, not the latest.
