hi all

i've been to north island at various time of year, but wonder if may will still be drivably snow-free in the south island? thanks for your opinions on whether i should try to go earlier or later.

also, no idea about the cooks..assumed the weather is fine year round?

thanks!

I, too, am interested in more generally knowing the best windows of time for N.Z. (we'll probably go to both islands) and the Cooks.

I've no idea about the Cooks, but have been to the SI many times, once in April-May. During that particular trip we had the best weather we've ever had on a trip to the SI. As I recall, the owner of a cottage we rented told us either April or May (can't remember which, sorry) is the most "settled" month of the year for the SI. That was certainly our experience, so much so that we've discussed going back in April/May next time.

BTW - with the exception of Haast Pass, the road to Milford Sound and the roads to a few ski areas, we've not experienced much snow on the roads of the SI, regardless of time of year (we usually visit in September).

Suggest you check the NZ school holiday schedule and make advance bookings if you plan to be on the SI during any school holidays.

Not been to the Cooks in May, only March and April. Based on my experience with that general time of year (April), May (especially early May) should be nice - not too hot (but still warm enough) with lots of sunshine and fairly low humidity.
