Am looking to add on to a PG cruise this summer, but I don't
understand how one gets around Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea.
Regular cabs (bridges?), water taxis, ferries?
If the ship stops in Papeete, how would I go about staying two
nights in Bora Bora and then getting to the airport?
Thanks.
How do you get around French Polynesia?

There is a ferry that runs between Papeete and Moorea, but to get to Bora Bora you would need to fly. Once on Bora Bora, most (nicer) restaurants will come get you by boat, most motu-based resorts have semi-regular water shuttles (for a fee) to the mainland, and the InterContinental has a (free, but maybe only for guests) water shuttle between its motu-based property and its Matira Point property. I believe both Moorea and Tahiti have a local "bus" system called "Le Truck" that--at least on Moorea--is heavily geared to the ferry schedule. Otherwise to get around the island with any flexibility you would want to look into a short-term car rental.
Thank you K2, Do you happen to know if the
ferry to Moorea brings you within walking distance
of the Intercontinental there?
Thanks again for replying.

No. The ferry docks at Vaiare on the east side of the Island and the IC is on the northwestern shore. I don't know if this is allowed but: while I find Fodor's useful, there are other travel websites that have much more active discussions about the South Pacific. You might try one where you might find someone to act as an Advisor about your Trip, if you catch my drift. Good luck with your planning. I also hope to make a trip on the PG in 2012.
