How bad is the drought in Australia?

Anyone living in Melbourne or Tasmania? Heard the drought is the worst in 20 yrs. Is there water-rationing now? I'll be going there in mid Dec bringing my city folks to see the rolling hills of Tassie. Is it that bad? When does the rain usually come? Lastly what temp is Cradle Mt end Dec? Do I need a sweater? Thanks for your help.

The drought in most places in Australia is the worst it has been in 100 years.
South Gippsland, Victoria is not affected at all.
Only a small part of Tasmania on the East coast is dry ( I think)
Yes you always need a sweater in Tasmania.
Water Rationing has just started in Melbourne for the 1st. time in 20. years.... this means no watering of lawns,no washing cars on roadways, no washing down cement driveways. etc.
The rain in Southern Victoria & Tasmania arrives at any time... we have had very wet xmas/ new year periods or they can be very hot... how long is a piece of string...
Northern Victoria is in drought allong with parts of South Australia, just about all of New South Wales, Queensland & Western Australia.
Enjoy you holiday in our Sunburnt country.

Just returned from OZ and all of the locals couldn't stop talking about how DRY it was there. They commented often on how low the rivers were (the lowest they can ever remember seeing it) and how brown and dry things looked (even in the rainforest). It seemed pretty green to me compared to southern california, but i think it is VERY abnormal for them. i hope the rain starts up soon!!!

Wayne,
I know you question was not directed at New South Wales - but I can't resist putting in my two pennyworth - I live in a rural area, which is normally very safe farming country - and I can tell you things are desperate. No crops no water or grass for the animals and the cost buying in feed is astronomical - and there is no end in sight.
However, I gather things are much better in Tasmania so enjoy your stay.

The drought is the worst in 20 years and we have just entered the first phase of water restrictions in Melbourne. However, around the city of Melbourne you won't notice anything radically different, our lovely gardens are still green. The water restrictions are for the purpose of conserving the supply on the assumption we don't get signficant rain in the next six months.
