How bad are the bugs in French Polynesia?
Hi there -

Saw someone else's posting about bugs in FP -is it really very bad? Or is it just like any other tropical place?

Here is another silly question - do those overwater bungalows have refrigerators, or can you request one - what do you do if you want to keep water and some food with you?

I know these are silly, but just kind of practical questions.

Any caveats anyone would give about staying in an overwater bungalow, or FP in general?

Thanks very much in advance!

Hi Mary:
The bugs didn't bother us at all on our October visit, except when we went hiking in the jungle on Moorea. Take some strong bug spray, but don't worry too much about it. Any nice hotel will have refrigerators in the overwater bungalows. Everywhere we stayed had a fridge (fully stocked w/ minibar items). It can be hard to fit much of your own food in there (in any hotel room fridge really), but we did just fine w/ our water, cheese, etc. (It's a great idea to find a grocery and get some supplies so you don't have to dine out every meal). I highly recommend FP and the overwater bungalows especially...it was the greatest vacation of my life.

I was there in late May and never noticed bugs of any sort. We never had to use a bug repellant. I've been to the caribbean where it was a nusance.

We stayed in an overwater bungalow at Le Meridien and had a minibar. It's a good idea to stock up on water & munchies while in town if you can instead of hitting th minibar - i think it cost $5 for a $1.25 bottle of water.

FP is beautiful regardless and it's all a matter of what you make of it - but I personally wouldn't want to go back unless I could stay in an overwater bungalow again.

Hi Pam and Vivi -

Thank you so much for your replies. That is great news - we are definitely going to book our honeymoon to FP!

We are going to stay at the Sheraton Moorea Lagoon Resort and the Beachcomber International on Bora Bora.

Any comments on these two hotels is welcome.

Thanks again!

I don't know what you budget is but on Bora Bora I would stay at either Le Meridien, Pearl Beach, or Bora Bora Lagoon Resort. These resorts are on their own private motu. Each resort has a boat which takes you to the main land throughout the day (about 5 minutes). These resorts face the main island so the views are incredible. I didn' stop to see the Beachcomber International though. I was there in February and saw no bugs at all. I took alot of bug spray on the advice of others in the forum and never used it.
